Murkowski Launches Write In Candidacy

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced that she will launch an independent write-in campaign for her Senate seat – viewed as a moderate Republican, Murkowski had been expected to cruise to reelection. However, the Tea Party Express poured $600,000 into the Alaska Senate primary, backing her opponent attorney Joe Miller (who was also backed by Sarah Palin).

Miller upset Murkowski, and is now backed by state and national Republicans. It is important though to recognize that Miller has an incredible record – a graduate of West Point and Yale Law School, Miller served his country in the US Army during the first Gulf War and as a judge in Alaska.

While Murkowski will not appear on the ballot, she has polled reasonably well. Although Miller would remain a slight favorite, Murkowski’s entrance complicates this race even further. She has less than 2 months to avoid falling into the “Charlie Crist” trap.
